About the Business
The World Plumbing Council defines plumbing as work associated with the provision of water supply pipework including, without limitation, that used for fire-fighting; all forms of space heating; gas installations; sanitary appliances; discharge pipework and drainage; the weathering of structures and buildings. We class plumbing as any pipework found in a domestic house. Things like boilers, cylinders and pumps are classed as heating but the two categories overlap so much that we generally do not differentiate.
Central heating is classed as everything from the boiler to the radiators including the pump, zone valves and also the heating of the domestic water. The Domestic water (the hot water that comes out of the taps) is normally heated either in a cylinder, (usually in the airing cupboard), or in a combi boiler (instant hot water).
Alan is qualified to do everything electrical in a domestic house. Although Alan is primarily a heating engineer and plumber recent regulations (Part P of the building regs) have made it necessary to become qualified in domestic electrics. As a plumber it was necessary to employ an electrican to sign off work like electric showers, boilers, even immersion heaters and pumps. This made things more expensive for the customers and so it was necessary to become qualified in Domestic Electrics.
